In addition to the children’s books youth are collecting to take to Houston to resupply reading programs (see displays in each narthex and article below), the youth of ELCA are also leading us in a Global Farm Challenge. The goal is to raise $500,000 to equip communities around the world and in the United States with livestock, seeds, tools, training and other agriculture-related activities to turn a hungry season into a hopeful season. The “hunger season” is an annual time when farmers’ stockpiles of food and money run out and food insecurity and hunger can skyrocket.
Almost 80% of the world’s food is produced on small farms relying on family labor. For many of these farming families, limited resources can mean they struggle to feed themselves. Half of the world’s 815 million undernourished people live on farms.
Your gifts to help meet the Global Farm Challenge will go to ELCA World Hunger to support projects in more the 60 countries around the world, including the United States.
If you would like to contribute to the offering our group will be taking to Houston, please make your check payable to the church and clearly designate your offering for the Global Farm Challenge.
